Make it your own

Make this recipe your own with what you have or what you like.

  • Swap out mushrooms - try different types of mushrooms for subtle differences in flavor. I usually use button or crimini mushrooms, but you can also try morel or portobello mushrooms
  • Use wild game - make the steak patties with venison or elk
  • Adapt the sauce - add a dash of Worcestershire sauce, some brown gravy, or some garlic to the sauce for a change of pace

Storage and freezing

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.

I have not tried freezing this recipe, but if I did I would complete the recipe through mixing the sauce ingredients but not cooking the patties. After browning the patties, I would freeze them separately from the sauce mixture. When ready to cook, thaw overnight then cook the patties in the sauce until cooked through.

The hamburger patties fell apart! It probably would have been good if it had stayed together. Next time I'll try it without the egg and soup mixed with the hamburger.

I'm sorry to hear that. Typically egg acts as a binder and works to hold the patties together more than if you don't include it. It could have to do with the percent of fat in the ground beefโ€”burgers with a higher fat level crumble more than those with a lower fat count.

Delicious and easy to make! I substituted the breadcrumbs to soda crackers (saltines) and didnโ€™t add any more salt.
