Streusel topping takes sweet potato casserole to the next level, adding a sweet, buttery crunch to the Thanksgiving classic.

Sweet potato casserole with streusel topping

Classic streusel topping is a butter, flour, and sugar mixture. For sweet potato casserole, we are deviating from that and using crushed cereal (like corn or bran flakes), brown sugar, butter, and chopped pecans.

Streusel topping ingredients: melted butter, brown sugar, chopped pecans, and crushed cereal

Melt the butter, then mix the topping ingredients together and set aside.

For the casserole, drain and mash a large can of yams. Add the melted butter, milk, sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Mix well.

Place the sweet potato mixture into a baking dish that has been prepared with non-stick cooking spray and spread evenly. Top with spoonfuls of the streusel topping, then spread the topping evenly across the top of the casserole.

Bake at 400ºF for about 30 minutes or until heated through and topping is crisp and browning.
