The model and size slow cooker you use can have a big impact on how a recipe turns out. Small slow cookers cook more slowly than larger ones, with larger models cooking the same amount of food more quickly. Additionally, if you change the quantities in a recipe, the cooking time will change.

6 quart Rival CrockPot (affiliate link)

This crock pot cube steak recipe was tested in a 6 quart Rival CrockPot (affiliate link), which is my favorite slow cooker (when my first one died I bought the exact same model to replace it). You will need to adjust the cooking time based on your individual appliance. For 4 quart models, you will need to increase cooking time, while 8 quart models will need less time to cook.

There is no substitute for getting familiar with your particular slow cooker; based on your experience with recipes over time, you will be able to judge how to adapt cooking times to your model.

    Common questions

    What is cube steak?

Cube steak is usually cut from top round or top sirloin, but it can be made from any cut of steak. To tenderize it, the meat is pounded with a meat mallet, making small cube-shaped indentations—hence the name "cube" steak.

If you cook with other red meats such as venison or elk, you can make your own cube steak by tenderizing any of the less tender cuts with a meat tenderizer.

The process of tenderizing meat and subsequently cooking it slowly in the crockpot yields fall-apart-tender steak that is delicious served with gravy over mashed potatoes.

Is cube steak the same thing as Salisbury steak?

Cube steak is beef steak that has been tenderized, whereas Salisbury steak is not actually steak at all. It is ground beef that has been formed into a patty and is served with beef gravy.

How do you cook cube steak so it's not tough?

Long, slow cooking results in the best cube steak, and this crock pot recipe is fork-tender. It practically falls apart when serving, so no worry about tough steak with this recipe.

Should cube steak be rinsed before cooking?

There is no need to rinse cube steak before cooking in the crock pot.

Can I add fresh mushrooms to Crock Pot Cube Steak with Mushroom Soup?

Absolutely! I sometimes add sliced button (white) mushrooms to this slow cooker cube steak recipe. They are a delicious addition to the mushroom soup gravy. You can either sauté them first or simply add them directly to the crock pot with the other ingredients.

Can I double this cube steak recipe?

To double Crock Pot Cube Steak with Mushroom Soup, just add double the amount of cube steak without doubling the other ingredients. There is plenty of rich sauce without doubling the soups.

Is Crock Pot Cube Steak gluten-free?

Gluten hides in the most unexpected places, including cream of mushroom soup and envelopes of onion soup mix. Gluten-free varieties of both are available, or you can make your own. The other ingredients are gluten-free.

What should I serve with Crock Pot Cube Steak?

The delicious mushroom gravy calls for a carb such as mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice. I would also recommend a simple steamed or lightly sautéed vegetable or a salad as a side dish. Steamed broccoli, fresh peas, seasoned green beans, or sautéed sugar snap peas would be perfect with this slow cooker cube steak recipe.
