How to make Baked Frozen Ravioli

Composite image: 1 - marinara sauce in a baking dish; 2 - frozen ravioli placed on top of the marinara sauce in the dish; 3 - more marinara sauce placed on the ravioli; 4 - shredded mozzarella cheese covering the marinara sauce.

Preheat the oven to 350ยบF and prepare a 9x13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray.
Add 1 cup of prepared marinara sauce to the bottom of the pan (1).

Layer half of the frozen ravioli on top of the marinara sauce, covering the bottom of the pan (2).

Add 1 cup of marinara sauce on top of the ravioli, covering the ravioli with sauce (3).

Sprinkle with 1 cup of the 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese and ยผ cup Italian-style breadcrumbs (4).

Composite image: 5 - Baked frozen ravioli casserole before baking; 6 - Baked Frozen ravioli casserole after baking and garnishing with fresh basil.

Layer the remaining ravioli on top, and cover with the remaining sauce. Top with remaining 2 cups mozzarella cheese (5).

Sprinkle with ยผ cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese.

Bake for 30 minutes or until casserole is golden and bubbly. Remove from oven and garnish with fresh basil leaves (6).

Substitutions & Variations

This is a great recipe for using what you have on hand.

  • Add meat - you can use meat ravioli, or add a layer of ground beef or pepperoni to the casserole
  • Change the sauce - you could use Alfredo sauce instead of marinara
  • Make it Tex-Mex - switch things up by using beef ravioli instead of cheese, Mexican-style cheese instead of mozzarella, plain breadcrumbs instead of Italian-style, cojita cheese instead of Parmesan, and enchilada sauce instead of marinara; garnish with cilantro instead of basil

Storage and freezing

Leftovers can be stored for about 5 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

If you are using refrigerated ravioli, you could assemble in a freezer-safe baking dish and freeze this before baking. To bake, thaw overnight in the refrigerator then bake as directed in recipe. Generally, the texture of frozen pasta does not stand up well to thawing and refreezing.
